In physics, expansion that is due to a rise
in temperature. It can be expressed in terms
of linear, area, or volume expansion. The
coefficient of linear expansion `alpha' is
the increase in unit length per degree
temperature rise; area, or superficial,
expansion `beta' is the increase in unit area
per degree; and volume, or cubic, expansion
`gamma'is the increase in unit volume per
degree. As a close approximation, `beta'=
2`alpha' and `gamma'= 3`alpha'.
